Sign Compatibility can give you insight into your own psyche

Knowing your sun sign can give you insight into your own psyche, but where the stars really speak is in sun sign compatibility with other people in your life. If you've ever had the experience of meeting someone and feeling an instantaneous attraction to that person, even a sense of kinship, chances are good you've witnessed sign compatibility in action. Conversely, those people who just make you tense probably have a sun sign that conflicts with yours.

Astrologers determine sun sign compatibility by looking at the positions of each sign on the Zodiac. The wheel of the Zodiac has a great deal of information coded into it; the compatibility of the signs, their natures, and their ruling elements all relate to the astrological signs positions on the wheel.

Trines

The word "trine" sounds a bit like the word "triangle" for a reason: it describes the relationship of signs that form a triangle on the zodiac. Trine relationships have the deepest harmony, as they also mark signs of the same element. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius form the fire trine, while Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn make up the earth trine. The air trine includes Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; the water signs form a trine between Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Your sign compatibility is greatest with other people in your trine. That goes for love relationships, family, friends and business associates. Unless you have a great deal of another element in your full birth horoscope, you'll find other members of your elemental trine especially good company.

Squares

If trines are the Zodiac's most harmonious sun sign compatibility, squares represent the points of greatest friction. If you look at the wheel of the Zodiac and draw a square from your sign to three others, you'll find the signs of those who just don't seem to understand you. These are the people with whom you have little in common when it comes to sun sign compatibility. For example, gentle Pisces will find friction with talkative Gemini's, pragmatic Virgos, and bold Sagittarians.

If you have plenty of square relationships in your life, it isn't a bad thing; friction can cause heat, but it also shapes carbon crystals into brilliant diamonds in a talented jeweler's hands. You'll have to work harder to see the world from those other points of view, but the greatest rewards come from the most effort. Square relationships can spur both parties on to greatness that a relaxed harmonious relationship could not.

Opposites

Opposites are a special case of square. The people directly opposite you on the Zodiac have the most to teach you. Curiously, these relationships sometimes provide an even greater harmony than a trine relationship, especially when the individuals are of the opposite sex. Other times, these relationships are outright negative.

Sun sign compatibility alone doesn't tell the whole story of the Zodiac, though. When you meet a square or an opposite, welcome that person as a chance to express the other sides of your nature and experience a different world-view. No one gets along with everyone, but you can use sign compatibility to gain respect and empathy for others.
