An Introduction to Chinese Zodiac Compatibility The Chinese have studied astrology for more than 2000 years. Since the years of the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. - 220 A.D.), Chinese astrologers have analyzed individuals' personality traits in relation to their birth times and the lunar cycle. In modern times, people are considering the insights of Chinese astrology as they analyze their romantic relationships for compatibility. Here we provide an overview of Chinese astrology and Chinese zodiac compatibility.

The Twelve Signs

Broadly speaking, each person is represented by one of twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. Each animal is associated with a particular year, and a cycle of animals is repeated every twelve years. The traits of the zodiac animals are believed to inform people's unique perspectives and peculiarities. Therefore, they may also have influence upon romantic relationships.

The twelve animal signs correspond to Jupiter's orbit around the sun; the Chinese refer to Jupiter as the Year Star. In order, these animals are: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar. (Sometimes the sheep is replaced with a ram or goat, and in Vietnam the rabbit is replaced with a cat.)

Twenty-eight major constellations in Jupiter's path are also used to determine Chinese zodiac compatibility. These do not necessarily correspond to constellations recognized in the western system.

The Elements

Chinese astrologers and psychics use five natural elements to guide their understanding of individuals and couples' dynamics. These elements include fire, wood, water, earth, and metal. The elements are also repeated in cyclical fashion. For instance, the dragon dominates the zodiac every twelve years, but a fire dragon appears only once every 60 years. Chinese zodiac compatibility considers whether signs are generative or destructive combinations. For instance, wood feeds fire (generative), but metal cuts wood (destructive).

Birth Months and Times of Day

In addition to considering the year of a client's birth, a psychic will note his or her birth month and precise birth time. When analyzing a couple's compatibility, a professional in Chinese zodiac compatibility will process this information in relation to the stars and animal signs. Ultimately, they could determine that a person might appear to be a dragon for instance, because they were born in a year of the dragon, but they might also be an ox based on their birth month, a dog based on their birth day, or a ram based on their birth hour.
